CCHS - October 2006

Carr School Mural Dedication and all 2nd Class Reunion

All of us in the class of 1954 knew this institution as "Carr Central High School".  However, most of us knew that it did not begin as such since the name of the school "Carr Junior High School" was carved in stone above the front door.  If you read the plaque shown below you will see that it was built in 1924 and served it's first 8 years as a kindergarten, elementary school and junior high school.  By the time our class entered the first grade in 1942 this building was now a combination junior/senior high school with grades 7 - 12.  Our family has a picture of our older brother, Bill, celebrating his 1st birthday in 1933 next door where our family lived briefly.  That was a vacant lot used to park bicycles and motorcycles while we were in school.

The city of Vicksburg has begun to utilize the broad, concrete canvas of the river front flood wall to depict various aspects of the city's history.  A number of organizations and individuals have contributed to the costs involved in these murals and that was the case with the CCHS mural.  As many CCHS students as could be reached were solicited for pledges to accomplish this mural and their generosity more than oversubscribed the issue.  The excess funds will be used to help with this and future all class reunions.

Click on any of the pictures below to view the slide show.  You can move through the slide show using the buttons at the top right of your screen.

(If you set your screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and shut down your tool bars you can see the slide show without any scrolling.   Higher resolutions will work also)

If you can help identify some of these folks or give me their graduation year; please drop me a note at jpcummins@jpcummins.net .  There were several other cameras at both events.  If you have some pictures that you would like to include in this album please send them to me.  If they are not digital, I will scan them and return them unharmed.

I am sorry to report that I have lost the pictures of our 2 great teachers who made the Friday night reunion.   They were Phyllis Davis and Elizabeth Smith.  I was using a brand new camera and must have hit the wrong button somewhere.  I also lost some great shots of some of our classmates.
